Community Canvas

The Community Canvas is an open framework for building and running communities, organized around three parts: Identity, Experience, and Structure. It has been translated into 15 languages and used by more than 300,000 community builders worldwide.

The idea came from Fabian Pfortmüller, who drew on his years building Sandbox, a global community of young entrepreneurs. I worked with him to turn that experience into a system that likeminded community builers could use. I helped shape the framework, edited the copy, and designed and illustrated the publication.

Cover of the Community Canvas Guidebook: the title in blue next to a compass logo, the line 'The guide to building meaningful communities', and a bundle of coloured pencils on white paper
The guidebook cover, version 1.0, May 2017
Two guidebook spreads: an overview of the three sections, Identity in blue, Experience in red and Structure in green, and an Identity page on Purpose that asks why the community exists, next to the compass illustration
Three sections, each with its own colour, and every page a set of questions
Twelve line illustrations in three rows: blue icons for Identity such as a fingerprint, a trophy, a flag and a scale; red icons for Experience such as a suitcase and a rulebook; green icons for Structure such as an org chart, a certificate, a bar chart and a grid of shapes
One illustration for each theme in the framework
Three pages from the Barranquilla Community Ecosystem final report: A City Leaders Community, Project Process with a map of the city's districts, and Recommendations with an aerial photo of the city and the river
